The Benefits Of An Efficient Hiring Process

If you're involved in hiring and recruitment in the post-pandemic world, you know exactly how scarce good employees are right now. Call it what you will – the job-hopper economy, the Great Resignation – employees are pickier with their job choices than ever before.

The last thing you need in this climate is an inefficient hiring process that causes good candidates to slip through your fingers. A long, drawn-out hiring process can be frustrating for both you and the potential employee, potentially resulting in lost time and missed opportunities.

Luckily, by investing in an efficient hiring process, you can ensure that your organisation is able to quickly identify and hire top talent without breaking the bank or losing quality. Here are five benefits of an efficient recruitment process:

1. It's easier to find candidates that knock your socks off.

The best candidates are in high demand and often have multiple job offers. If you want to make sure that your organisation nabs the cream of the crop, you need a streamlined hiring process that can quickly identify top talent and move them along in the recruitment funnel.

2. It's faster for everyone involved.

No more waiting around for weeks or even months while potential employees fill out paperwork and await their interview. An efficient hiring process eliminates the lag time between when you post a job and when you find an ideal hire.

3. It's more cost-effective.

Let's face it – the recruiting process costs a pretty penny. Between job postings, background checks, and other screening processes, the cost of recruiting can add up quickly. By streamlining your hiring process, you can save time (and money!) by quickly identifying qualified candidates and getting them in the door faster.

4. It's more likely to result in a great hire.

Don't let great candidates slip through the cracks of an outdated recruitment process. It's 2023 and we've got the technology to make sure that the right people get hired for the job!

5. It allows you to scale quickly.

'Scalable' is the new buzzword in the business world, and for good reason. If your organisation is looking to grow quickly, you need a hiring process that can keep up with your expanding needs. An efficient recruitment process allows you to hire quality employees at scale – without sacrificing quality of work or customer service.

Welcome To Swob, The Platform Helping Companies Hire Faster

With Canada and the United States getting back to business, opportunities for employment are booming and Swob — an award-winning recruitment platform— is making looking for a job easy and hiring even easier.

“There are many people looking for work now that businesses are back up and running.”, says co-founder Alexander Florio, “Swob is not only helping job seekers get hired faster, but we’re helping employers hire faster as well.”

The free app, created specifically for job seekers, is available for download via the Apple Store or Google Play (also available as a desktop option). The app works like a dating app in that job seekers can scroll through part-time, full-time & seasonal employment opportunities and swipe right for those they wish to apply for and swipe left on those they don’t. Users simply create a profile, upload a resume, and identify their location — like how you would with a dating app — and then are matched with a wide range of jobs in retail & food service from which to choose.

“The idea for Swob came from my brother, Alexander, who was frustrated with the process of applying for jobs and felt there should be an easier way.” says Founder Stephanie Florio, “At the time he was using a dating app, and thought of merging the process of job hunting with the functionality of dating apps. The feedback we received on the idea from both employers and students inspired us to launch the business — we had discovered a problem and created a solution.”

For employers, Swob makes recruiting more cost-efficient and less time consuming. While most job boards charge per click and deliver subpar candidates, Swob’s built-in filters ensure that companies are presented with only the most qualified candidates. With monthly, annual, or pay-as-you-post options, employers are also provided with features that ensure their jobs are showcased in front of thousands of qualified users in their area. While the app is strictly utilized by job seekers, employers can get started by heading to the Swob website to begin posting job opportunities.

The pandemic has not only produced an influx of people looking to return to work, but it has also created an uprise in virtual culture, and Swob is the app that’s helping job seekers find work and employers hire faster.

Kill that Interview

Hey guys! My name is Kamika. You may have seen me appear on Swob's social media platforms over the past couple of months. I am currently interning at Swob as a Marketing and Business Development Coordinator. I am currently a 4th year Media Business student. One of my most nerve-racking yet rewarding accomplishment to date is getting over be fear of *dun dun dun* INTERVIEWING. Interviews can be anxiety-inducing and overwhelming, but with preparation and confidence, they can be amazing experiences as well.

My initial approach to interviewing is understanding that it's not all about what I know but also about who I am as a person. Go into the interview being authentic and genuine to who you are. Displaying aspects of your personality throughout the interview will give the interviewer a quick look into who they could potentially be working with in the future. Be personable and ask a lot of questions. As much as this interview is about seeing if you are right for the job, it's also about whether this company aligns with your values and wants. Knowing about the industry and the company you're interviewing for will also give you a leg up compared to other candidates. I ensure that I look into the industry insights and the company's social media and website. If you are awarded the luxury of knowing who will be interviewing you, I recommend looking into that person's work on a platform like LinkedIn. The research will not only show that you took the time to prepare, but it also will, in turn, make you more confident. Often, a lack of confidence comes from being unequipped for the task at hand, so be prepared.

Coming directly out of an academic institution can sometimes make you feel like your underqualified for particular work because of your lack of workplace experience. This is far from the truth. Employers recognize that everyone has to start somewhere. How you market, yourself makes the difference and has made the difference for me. If an employer asks me how I would solve a particular problem, I would bring up real-life experiences from working on a specific project and how I was able to navigate it to what programs I've used to complete particular tasks. Academic knowledge is still experience.

All in all, don't put too much pressure on yourself! Interviewing takes practice just like anything else. Some end the way we would like, and others don't. This is all a part of the process to make you a better interviewee and help you work on many valuable life skills.

What It's Like Working At Swob Inc. From A Coordinators Experience

As a high school student, the aspect of working was relatively new to me. However, with a lot of support and a great team, I set my days working at Swob as an intern, with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement. Over the past four months, I had the opportunity to work with Swob, a company I have grown to learn more about. Four months to get to know the business, how they operate, and how to add value to the team, while growing more as a student.

I have developed and learned different skills throughout my experience at Swob, all of which have allowed me to grow professionally and personally. Whether it is from learning effective communication or learning new strategies and ways in digital creativity, I can confidently say that I can apply this knowledge I have built from this experience into somewhere I will grow more and develop.

My experience with the founders of the company has only been supportive. Although COVID-19 has affected work and our interactions with others, my supervisors were able to provide as much support as they can. They valued communication, something many people need during times like these. I can see their continuous effort to help their followers, providing them with meaningful and informative content.

As I reflect on my experience at Swob, I am excited about the next adventure I am to embark on in the future. I have no doubt that I will have the same wonderful support as I have always received as I make this transition across. As a high school student, I think Swob is just what individuals at my age need. I know many individuals struggling to find jobs, and with Swob, they benefit from easy-to-apply resources and tips to succeed. I would encourage individuals who are exploring work or wanting to build experience to consider Swob.

Struggling to Find Staff in Rural Areas? Try Swob!

It’s that time of year again. Although the holidays are going to feel a little different this year, retailers need to ensure that they are staffed for the last-minute holiday shopper — especially in rural areas. Swob is an award-winning recruiting platform built to help employers find local talent, quickly and easily, using our smart recruiting service.

Most recently, Swob has introduced “Pay as You Post”, giving you the flexibility to post jobs as you need, without any long-term commitments.

Why Choose “Pay as You Post”?

Flexibility

  • Only pay for what you need

  • Post any number of jobs

Freedom

  • No monthly commitments

  • No long-term commitments

Simplicity

  • No bills, no surprises

  • No hidden charges

A member of the Store Operations team at M&M Food Market had this to say about Swob:

“We use Swob to recruit for general temporary help for our 300+ locations across Canada during the pandemic. The initial set up of our ads went very quickly and the admins’ responses to any questions we did have was timely and helpful. The platform is easy to use and we particularly liked the feature that allows us to copy a previous ad. This is very useful when we are recruiting for the same position across the network.”

Spend less time stressing about hiring and more time enjoying the holidays. To learn more, visit www.swobapp.com/pricing.

Support During COVID-19

Here we are, more than six months in this pandemic environment. A lot has happened since the start. Whether it’s spending more time at home, wearing a mask, or not getting a proper summer break, we’re still being challenged. However, Swob has tried to provide as much support to students, employers, and job seekers during this difficult time. Swob has hosted webinars and posted many videos and content, with the purpose of providing further support and feedback. In our previous blog, “Recruitment Support During COVID-19” back in May, Swob understood the issues and offered their support for all the employers, and there’s definitely others to acknowledge, especially the frontline workers. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, many people find themselves out of work. If searching for jobs hasn't already been difficult, it’s getting more challenging to search for these jobs, considering safety concerns and how many companies are temporarily closed or have limited their amount of staff needed. This is why Swob wants to continue to provide support to everyone looking to pursue a job. Instead of going through many job-wanting websites, students and job seekers can conveniently search for a job in the safety of their own home. Whether you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, you can feel free to contact Swob with the guarantee that they can help and listen to you. We understand that this has been a long and difficult time for everyone, and at Swob, our focus is to make finding a job as easy as possible.

Your Future is Knocking

Some of the most stressful questions every student encounters are: “What will you be doing in the future?”,  “What are you studying towards?”, “What are you going to be in the future?”. The reality is, a lot of us do not know what we will be pursuing. However, while in school, this is one of the best times to figure out what you want to do.

One way to figure out what path you want to be on is the courses you are taking. The courses or programs of interest can be a great indicator of what you want to pursue. The course may not say Lawyer 101, however, the type of courses you enjoy may indicate what you like or dislike. For instance, if you thoroughly enjoy math or science, maybe a STEM major is in your future. If you prefer humanities courses, maybe you would be well suited for law or social work. The classes you take in high school and post-secondary will help you greatly to find out what you like and dislike and hopefully set you on a path that’s best for you.

Sometimes we are quick to neglect hobbies. However, you may be ignoring your talents in professions that would be perfect for you. Hobbies like sports, music, cooking, baking, arts or beauty can actually be more than just a hobby. If these things are your passion, do not be afraid to pursue them.

While in high school and post-secondary, take advantage of your school’s co-op or internship programs. This gives you practical, hands on experience in the workplace and can help you figure out what you like and dislike. This is the perfect opportunity to explore as many different placements as possible.

Finding part-time jobs in different fields. Your part-time job can be telling you more than you realize about what you want to do in the future. If you don’t mind retail, maybe you can be suited for something in sales. Restaurant jobs can indicate you like the customer service aspect, which can mean the human resource field might be up your alley. As well, maybe the kitchen is more of your passion and studying culinary arts would be beneficial. Or maybe jobs in warehouses or grocery stores, may indicate that you enjoy logistical processes or inventory management. Also, maybe your job as a tutor or camp counsellor may mean you would be good as an educator.

To you, these part-time jobs may just be minuscule ways of finding money, but the reason why employers are always looking for experience on resumes, is because they want to know what you have already learned in the workplace. Part-time jobs teach you various skills, use those to reflect what you know, what you’re good at and reflect on which ones you like that you may consider pursuing that path.

Remember, it’s okay not to know what you want to do right now, but maybe there are some factors around you that are telling you exactly what the next step should be.

ADULTING 101: BUDGETING AND MONEY MANAGEMENT

A lot of people assume that basic money management is a skill you just automatically have. Like what’s so complicated? You work, you save and you spend. Right? Well, although it seems very black and white, money management isn’t as easy if you’ve never been exposed on how to do it best to fit your needs. As students, we feel as though we’ll just learn these things when we’re older, but the best way to be financially smart with your money is to foster good habits while we’re young.

The best thing you can do financially for yourself is to create a budget. Everything makes more sense when you write it down, and trust me, you do not realize how much you are spending on everyday things until you write it down. Your budget should consist of things such as your saving goals, your expenses and your leisure spending.

Sticking to a budget can be difficult, however by having financial goals you want to work towards, they can be great motivators to help you stay on track. Some common saving goals are purchasing a car, a year's worth of rent so you can move out of your parent’s place, a vacation getaway, a new laptop, or phone. Having these goals in place will help you remember what you’re working towards and that your budgeting is not all for nothing.

Another way to stay ahead of your money is by having a different type of savings, usually referred to as a sinking fund. These are for your planned and unplanned expenses that may arise in the future, so stashing some money away for those things now can greatly help your future self when these expenses occur. Sinking funds can include: an emergency fund, as you never know what could happen; car maintenance, which you can dip into when you have an oil change or need some car repairs done; veterinary fees, can be used for pet check-ups or emergency care; or something like gifts or Christmas, you know that someone’s birthday or Christmas happens every year, so slowly budgeting for it will be a stress reliever when the time comes.

Now let’s take a look at your expenses. Some common student expenses can be your phone bill, gym memberships and subscriptions. Review all the expenses you pay for on a monthly basis. Ask yourself if all these things are necessary? For instance: see if your workplace offers any discounts with mobility companies, maybe cut the costly gym membership and use the free gym on your school’s campus, or maybe take advantage of student subscription deals instead of paying full price. There are many ways students can cut back. Now that you have evaluated what expenses are necessary, figure out how to pay them on time and effectively, without it hurting your wallet too much.

Leisure spending, this is where most of us struggle when dealing with our finances. However, remember budgeting doesn’t have to be this negative restricting thing, you just need to account for your leisure spending on your budget, which in turn will help you reach those savings goals you’re working toward. Some discretionary spending you may be doing is restaurants/takeout, entertainment, or clothes. The best way to find out how much you really spend on these things is to gather one to three months of your transactions. That way you know how much you can realistically budget for yourself to ensure you set yourself up for success. It’s okay to spend on these things, just not in excessive ways. There are small initiatives that can be taken to help minimize your leisure spending. For example, instead of buying coffee every day, maybe make it at home before school or work. Of course, that doesn’t mean you will never be able to enjoy Starbucks again, but instead of 5 times a week, treat yourself to once or twice a week instead.

Now that you know your savings goals, your expenses, and what you like to spend leisurely, what do you do? There are many different methods of budgeting, you can write it down in a journal or in your phone’s notes. Another popular method is, taking cash envelopes and stuffing them with money for different categories. Having an envelope to grab for the week with your restaurant budget can be beneficial as you can only spend what you carry which keeps you accountable to your budget. Of course, taking out cash can be cumbersome as well so if you’re more of a digital person, there are various apps that help you budget. Some popular ones are: Mint, You Need a Budget (YNAB) and Every Dollar. These apps can help you budget your money with your phone and make it effortless so there aren’t any excuses.

Budgeting does not have to be a chore, just something habitual you do in your daily life. It’s funny that as young adults, we think all this knowledge will just be ingrained into us once we hit adulthood. That is too far away to start being smart with money, take control of your finances today to help you give your adult self a head start.

When Looking for Retail Staff, Say Goodbye to Traditional Job Boards and Hello to Swob – The New Technology

Are you sick of traditional job boards that don’t work? Do you hate seeing tons of applications come through from candidates who aren’t even in your area, let alone the same country? Sure, you can post your jobs for free on traditional job boards, but free doesn’t always mean free when they waste your time. This is why we spent more than a year asking employers such as McDonald’s Canada, Recipe Unlimited, etc. what they want to see in a recruitment platform targeted to their industry. Out of the research, Swob Inc. was born.

Swob is an award-winning recruitment platform developed to help employers in high turnover industries such as Retail, Food Service, Hospitality, etc. find qualified local talent.

With businesses reopening, it’s more important than ever for employers to hire all the staff they need, in a fast, efficient and cost-effective manner. All of the features unique to Swob were developed from employer feedback, as it was evident that the job boards already available were not sufficient. For example, a Tim Hortons Franchisee in Toronto mentioned to us his frustrations when posting on other traditional job boards. He mentioned that when he would post part-time roles for his store in Toronto, he would receive applications from candidates in Vancouver, which was a complete waste of his time. Once we heard this, we took his feedback and developed a solution called ‘Maximum Applicant Distance’, which allows employers to select how far they want candidates to apply from, ensuring local applicants. Now employers find people who are close by their stores. Swob has also developed a ‘Web-Based Careers Page’, which allows employers to showcase vacant job opportunities on their own website, without the costs of having to hire a developer. This feature will help attract more qualified candidates to your business.

A recent survey indicated that 85% of Swob users feel comfortable returning to work and are actively seeking employment. Although businesses have reopened, many employers are struggling to retain staff and hire new employees. A member of the Store Operations team at M&M Food Market reports:

“We use Swob to recruit for general temporary help for our 300+ locations across Canada during the pandemic. The initial set up of our ads went very quickly and the admins’ responses to any questions we did have was timely and helpful. The platform is easy to use and we particularly liked the feature that allows us to copy a previous ad. This is very useful when we are recruiting for the same position across the network.”

A survey completed by Retail Insider, reports that “the vast majority of retailers surveyed are looking to hire into the fall and winter of this year”. The findings also suggest that “66% of respondents said that they were looking to hire only part-time staff, and about 35% said that they would hire full-time staff”. If you’re an employer getting ready to hire, don’t waste your time and resources posting your roles on traditional job boards. Find out why companies such as McDonald’s, Leon's, Lone Star Texas Grill, Bell Canada, etc. have made the switch and are now using Swob to hire.

5 Tips To Deal With Stress

As students, we have a lot going on. There’s school by day and working part-time nights and weekends, and it’s okay to get stressed from time to time. Here are some tips on how to relieve some stress when there sometimes just so much going on.

1) Go on Daily Walks

Either it be with your dog, or by yourself, going on daily short walks are a great way to relieve stress. It gives you fresh air, time to think, time to listen to music or a podcast and enjoy nature. Sometimes all it takes is a 15-minute walk to clear your head, and when you’re a student sometimes it is nice just to clear your head.

2) Breathe

Have a reminder on your phone, to put a timer on for one minute a day and Just Breathe. Try to do this 3 times a day. Sometimes everything is so stressful, that sometimes we just forget to breathe. All it takes is one minute.

3) Companionship

Surround yourself with positive friends and family to either have someone to talk to about anything you may be feeling. Or on the flip side, if you just need an escape, having these people around can get your mind off things and sometimes that’s all you need.

4) Find your happy place

Some people find peace when they are in a coffee shop, somewhere quiet and where no one will bother you.

Some people find solitude in nature; either it be visiting the lake, beach, hiking on trails or the forest, biking or walking.

Some people find comfort in their bedroom. Make that place, your place, by filling it with your favourite books and movies. Bringing in memorabilia, posters or personal photos. Even painting the walls can change the whole atmosphere in that place.

5) Sleep

I think when we all have a million things going on, we forget to sleep. Make sure you’re well-rested as it can make tomorrow a lot better than you think.

Life can get stressful and hectic, but you’re allowed to have some self-care too!

Recruitment Support During COVID-19

Swob is an award-winning social recruiting platform developed to help employers in high turnover industries such as Grocery, Food Service, Hospitality and Retail, find local talent using our recruiting platform. Swob currently has over 20,000+ students and young job seekers using the platform, who are actively searching for part-time, temporary, and even full-time employment.

Given the current COVID-19 environment, we recognize that we are living in such uncertain times. This has had a material effect on both people seeking employment and for employers who are actively seeking candidates. In order to make sure our users feel prepared, we have started hosting a weekly webinar, which we live stream on our Facebook page, providing insights and tips our users can use when searching for employment. The purpose of the webinars is to ensure that anyone actively looking for a job is well prepared and understands what employers are looking for in a candidate. Students and young job seekers are always providing us insight regarding how difficult it is to connect with employers, which is why Swob was developed to help this underserved audience. While many individuals across Canada are no longer working out of fear of catching COVID-19, many students are still actively pursuing job opportunities. In speaking with our users, many recognize they are least at risk to catch COVID-19, and want to work.

When Swob was developed, we wanted to ensure that we built the most effective and convenient platform for employers, which is why we spent time meeting with the human resource departments at companies like McDonald’s Canada and Recipe Unlimited to understand what they would like to see in a recruiting platform. We were surprised to learn that many companies struggle to recruit young talent and that many employers are looking for new innovative solutions. All of the features available on Swob came from employer feedback, as it was evident that the job boards already available were not sufficient in helping employers with their recruitment efforts.

It is becoming especially difficult for some employers to find staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are ensuring we are offering whatever support to employers we can. In the current environment, while many companies are temporarily closed, others like grocery retailers are struggling to find people and Swob has successfully helped to bring them suitable candidates. A member from the Store Operations team at M&M Food Market recently said this to say about their experience using Swob:

“We use Swob to recruit for general temporary help for our 300+ locations across Canada during the pandemic. The initial set up of our ads went very quickly and the admins’ responses to any questions we did have were timely and helpful. The platform is easy to use and we particularly liked the feature that allows us to copy a previous ad. This is very useful when we are recruiting for the same position across the network.”

In addition, the Canadian government is offering wage subsidies to companies who want to retain or hire new staff. Employers who hire summer students are now able to apply for a subsidy of up to 100% of the provincial or territorial hourly minimum wage, which will help put more Canadians back at work.

We understand that this is a difficult time for everyone, and at Swob, the goal is to make recruitment as easy as possible for employers. To date, Swob has helped many young job seekers and students find meaningful employment across Canada. Find out why companies like Leon's Furniture, Lone Star Texas Grill, Cactus Club, Pizzaville, etc. have made the switch and are now using Swob to hire great local candidates.

Let Swob focus on bringing the right candidates to you.

4 Tips On How to Be Productive While Working from Home

It’s currently 6 o’clock on a Friday. Normally, most of us would be getting home from work and maybe taking a short break before heading right back out the door. Maybe you’re planning on going to dinner and a movie with some friends or maybe you’re planning on going for a drink with your significant other. Well, not on this Friday night you’re not. We are living in quite an interesting time in history right now with the Coronavirus or Covid-19. It feels as if normal life has been put on pause and we don’t know what to do. So many of the world’s largest companies have rolled out mandatory work-from-home policies amid the increase of Covid-19. Now that Covid-19 has officially hit pandemic status, people all around the world (including myself) are having to find ways to adjust with working from home. It’s actually much more than that. It’s not just working from home, but really not leaving home at all. However, just because we are stuck working from home for the next little while doesn’t mean it has to affect our productivity. There are many ways we can adjust our habits to ensure we are not falling behind in our work. Believe me, I’m guilty of being a little too relaxed when I’m working from home, so this is quite the adjustment for me too. Probably the biggest adjustment I’ve had to make. With that said, there are some habits that I have picked up on in the last couple of weeks to guarantee maximum productivity.

1. Keep it “business as usual”

This has been probably the biggest adjustment… for me that is. I’m guilty of being someone who can work at home all day in pj’s. It doesn’t ever affect how productive I am, I’m just really comfortable. However, this is a different situation. When you’re working from home the odd time, it’s fine to work in pajamas. However, now that we’re working from home for the foreseeable future, treat it as if you’re going into the office. Have a shower in the morning and get dressed. You’ll find yourself in a better mindset. So rather than lying in bed all day with your computer, treat it like a regular workday and keep your routine consistent.

2. Communication is key!

At the office, communicating with your staff or co-workers is a breeze. You can literally be sitting in your chair and speak to a colleague without getting up. However, that’s not the case with remote work. When working from home, be sure to set expectations for communication with your team and try to organize calls throughout the day. Now more than ever, it’s easier to communicate with your team using online tools like Skype or Zoom. Take advantage of those tools. You’ll find that communicating can still be a breeze. Side note, if you’re scheduling Skype or Zoom meetings throughout the day, it will force people to follow the tip above and get dressed!

3. Turn the news off!

This is a situation that nobody saw coming. It sucks. There’s no denying that. However, we’re all in this together. There’s no sense in complaining about it. What does that solve? As long as we’re all responsible and take all of the necessary precautions, we’ll all get through this difficult time. Also, don’t be constantly checking the news. Take a break from it. It’s only going to make you worry more for the time being. As long as we can keep ourselves occupied, we will get through these uncertain times unscathed. Yes, you should be informed about what is happening, but take a break from the news. It could help you stay relaxed. Taking a break from the news isn’t a bad thing, so make sure you don’t have it on 24/7.

4. Stay positive

We’re all in this together. I know it’s easier said than done, however, we all have to do our best to remain positive and follow proper protocol. Make no mistake, these are worrying times for everyone. So rather than panicking, call a friend or loved one. Make more of an effort to help out a neighbour. Go for a walk, have a game night with your family, find a new show to watch. We have so many modern amenities to help keep us occupied. I recently came across a quote that said “Your grandparents were called to war. You’re being called to sit on your couch. You can do this”. So remember, wash your hands, stay positive, keep it business as usual and let’s get through this together and stronger than before!

 Stay safe everyone!

The Top 3 Most Common Interview Questions

It seems obvious to most, however you would be shocked to learn that some people still think it’s perfectly fine to show up to a job interview unprepared. If you want the interview to be a big hit, you’ve got to be ready if you expect the outcome to go in your favour. Don’t be that person who thinks they can show up and “wing” the interview… you won't, and the interviewer will see right through you. If you want the interview to go well, you have to understand the job requirements and be able to communicate to the employer how your background and skill set to match what is being looked for. Be sure to keep in mind that you’re in the spotlight during the interview, and the employer is using these questions to learn more about you and see if they think you have what it takes for the role!

Through our research, we have gathered the most popular and common questions asked during job interviews, and tips on how to best answer them.

1. Why did you apply for this job?

This question is more difficult to answer than one might think. Sure, you might have honestly applied for the role because you’re looking for a career change, however that can’t be the main reason. Instead of answering this question by saying “I’m looking for a change”, be passionate and discuss how you’re motivated by the opportunity and ready to tackle a new challenge. You can even mention particular tasks in the job description that sparked your interest or your passion for the brand.

2. What are your long term goals? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

This is a common question you should expect to be asked in a job interview, whether it’s your first time applying for a job or even if you’re established. Be sure to mention how job stability is an important factor to you, and how the role you’ve applied to can help further develop your skills, such as communication and time management, which is crucial in today’s workforce.

3. What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

This question is almost certainly going to be asked during a job interview, and it’s a doozy of a question! You better believe the interviewer is going to evaluate how you answer this question and compare it to other interviewees. This question, although it may seem casual, provides an idea of who is the most qualified. So be sure to think about this question. Don’t offer up the same old’ cliche responses, like I work too hard as a weakness. Be honest with the question. Then discuss how you’ve been improving your weakness. Honesty and humility is recognized in a question like this, so be sure to keep that in mind!

Whether you’re set to go on your first ever job interview or are thinking about a career change, always practise and make sure you’re as prepared as you can be! Prepare and be yourself, and you’ll be on your way to work in no time!

If you are a student thinking about finding a part-time job, you know what to do! Swob

The End of a Decade - Revisiting 10 Major Moments of The Last 10 Years

When midnight strikes tonight, we will be entering into 2020. A new year with new hopes, new goals and new aspirations. However, this year will be different. We’re not just entering into a new year, a new decade. When I think about the last ten years, a few thoughts and moments pop into mind. First thought, like most of you I’m sure, is where did the time go? Time really flies.

As we enter into this new decade, I thought I would share some significant moments that truly stood out to me as an entrepreneur in Toronto and as a Toronto sports fanatic. Here is my list of my top 10 significant moments throughout the past decade.

1. The Golden Goal - February 28th, 2010

This moment was special. It’s one of the moments where you’ll always remember where you were when it happened. Regardless if you’re a sports fan, if you’re Canadian, odds are you remember this goal. The goal was scored by Sidney Crosby and sealed the deal for Canada, securing the gold medal with a win over the rival Americans. This moment was made even more special due to the fact that it happened on Canadian soil at the Canada Hockey Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. The puck is currently displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

2. The Release of the Original iPad - January 2010

When you think of Apple products, the iPad is one of those products that most people own. There have been so many different versions of the iPad throughout the decade, however, it all started with the original in 2010. The original iPad was introduced in January 2010, and debuted in April 2010. Since the launch of the original, there have been many variations released, including a ‘mini’ version as well as a ‘pro’. I wonder what Apple has in store for the next decade.

3. 2012 Phenomenon - December 21st, 2012

This is one of the moments in history that I think most people just want to forget about. There was a belief that the end of the world would occur in December 2012, and that the doomsday was upon us. To be honest with you, I didn’t think much of this at the time. I wasn’t worried about the “doomsday” that was supposedly upon us, and I certainly didn’t lose any sleep. However, some people genuinely believed the end of the world was upon us. Crazy times!

4. Gangnam Style by PSY - July 15th, 2012

Ahh Gangnam Style. Good times. I remember when this song came out. People went absolutely crazy for it, and I’ll admit, so did I. I didn’t think much of the song at first, and I certainly wouldn’t have believed you if you told me it would be the first video on YouTube to ever reach a billion views. However, the song grew on me each time I listened to it. I would find myself blasting the radio every time it came on, and would almost certainly find myself doing the dance. As of today, Gangnam Style has over three billion views on YouTube, however it is no longer the most viewed video. It has lost the title to the hit “Baby Shark”, which has over four billion views. I wonder if PSY could have ever predicted the songs success.

5. The Bat Flip - October 14th, 2015

Just like the “Golden Goal”, this was another one of those moments where you’ll always remember where you were when it happened. Toronto was in a frenzy with the Blue Jays at the time, as the team had very little success in recent years and it was a breath of fresh air to see them playing meaningful baseball in October. As a diehard Toronto sports fan, this moment was bittersweet for me. Don’t get me wrong, the moment the ball hit off Jose Bautista's bat was one of the best sporting moments I’ve ever experienced. I wish I could relive that moment. The crowd, the way Jose threw the bat… it was simply incredible. I was at Wayne Gretzky's bar in Toronto with a friend and the place absolutely erupted. It was incredible. What made that moment bitter is knowing that I had an opportunity to attend the game with my sister and Swob co-founder, Stephanie. However, she decided to pass on the game and I ended up at Wayne Gretzky's. The Blue Jays went on to win the ALDS and eliminate the Texas Rangers with that game 5 victory. Thanks Steph!

6. Auston Matthews NHL Debut - October 12th, 2016

This moment made the list because I’m a diehard Toronto Maple Leafs fan. Maybe I’m a little biased… I don’t care. This moment was extremely significant for me. If you’re a Leafs fan, then you understand why. This past decade hasn’t exactly been kind to the Toronto Maple Leafs. They were a joke at the start of it. Year after year, it was the same old story. The team had nothing positive going for them. The team still hadn’t replaced fan favourite Mats Sundin, who played his final season with the team in 2008. So, when the Leafs drafted Auston Matthews with the first overall pick in June of 2016, it was significant. The feeling for Leafs fans was that of pure joy and relief. Finally, we had a young star centre to build a contending team around. Then he made his NHL debut... I don’t think anybody could have predicted the result of his NHL debut, not even Auston Matthews. A four goal NHL debut, the first time in modern NHL history that this has been accomplished. All four of Matthews goals that night were scored on Ottawa goalie, Craig Anderson. Craig Anderson has since then joked about the debut, and even had Matthews sign a stick for him, which said “Thanks four making my first game memorable”. Get it? Fun fact, Auston Matthews has yet to score a hattrick since his NHL debut. I’m sure we’ll see a few of them in the next decade.

7. 2016 United States Presidential Election - November 8th, 2016

The United States Presidential election in 2016 was fascinating. It saw Donald Trump running for the Republican party and Hillary Clinton running for the Democratic party, and did things ever get heated between the two candidates. Normally, the debates aren’t something I would ever pay any attention to, however in 2016, it was must-see TV. It was almost like a major sporting event. People would make plans to watch the debates, and it was completely justified. Both candidates had their fair share of low blows towards one another, and regardless of how you feel about the outcome of the election, it sure made for some entertaining times and will certainly go down in history as one of the most polarizing elections in United States history.

8. The Legalization of Marijuana in Canada - October 17th, 2018

When I think about the legalization of marijuana in Canada, I’m reminded of how truly historic the moment was. We lived through the prohibition with marijuana, and to witness its legalization is truly an historic moment. When marijuana became legal across Canada in October of 2018, it was celebrated by many across the country, and was viewed as a massive victory for marijuana activists across Canada.

9. Youngest Billionaire - Kylie Jenner - March 2019

At the young age of 21, Kylie Jenner became the world's youngest billionaire, accomplishing this in March of 2019. This moment is absolutely significant for me. I look at this as inspiration. Kylie has built her own brand, and has accomplished much of her success on her own. Kudos to her for all of the work she has done, and when I think about her being the world’s youngest billionaire, I feel inspired. It should inspire you too!

10. The Shot - May 12th, 2019

Yes, another moment that everyone remembers where they were when this happened. The Toronto Raptors had finished with yet another strong regular season. However, the playoffs were different this time around. There was a true genuine sense of optimism with the team. What was different this time around then in years past you ask? Well, Kawhi Leonard that is. Although Kawhi was in Toronto for just one season, the impact he made in Toronto will last forever. On Sunday May 12th, 2019, the Raptors played game 7 against the Philadelphia 76ers, for a chance to play in the Eastern Conference finals. With the game tied at 90 a piece with less than 4 seconds remaining, Kawhi was given the ball, and with less than 1 second left on the clock, he took a shot. Once the ball was up in the air, everyone was holding back their breath. Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce and finally… the ball goes in the net and Toronto went absolutely crazy. The Toronto Raptors ended up winning the 2019 NBA Championship for the first time in their 25-year history, and although Kawhi ended up leaving us for the Los Angeles Clippers, he will always be loved in Toronto.

Well, that wraps up the decade. I wish you and your loved ones a very happy new year and all the best in 2020! Cheers to the next decade 🥂 - By Alexander Florio (Tuesday, December 31st, 2019.)

5 Tips On Affording Your Dream Trip As A Student

So, you’ve been working hard, making your own money, and saving your hard-earned cash. It makes sense that you want to treat yourself. And rightfully so!

If you plan on getting away, especially during reading week, you’ll need to know how much a trip is going to cost you and know how much you need to save. Here are some tips and tricks to plan your trip!

  1. LOCATION

First things first, you’re going to need to figure out where you want to go. If you’re thinking of traveling to places like Europe or Asia, you have to recognize that it’s going to be more expensive than if you travel throughout North America. Visiting places like Europe or Asia is definitely doable, however you might have to cut your vacation length a little bit in order to save some money.

  2. OPEN UP THAT EXCEL SPREADSHEET

Now that you know where you’re headed, open a spreadsheet and start thinking about what you’ll need to bring and what you can save money on. Organizing your trip with a spreadsheet allows you to easily add up your costs and see how little changes may affect your final cost.

  3. TRANSPORTATION

It’s now time to figure out how to get there! Your flights and overall transportation costs can add up and potentially be the most expensive part of the trip. To lower costs, do some research on the local public transportation methods available, as it will more than likely be cheaper than taxis.

If you’re planning on hitting multiple spots (especially in Europe) it’s important to consider the order of travel to have a logical route for travelling. Along with that, it would be beneficial to consider the cheapest country in which to fly and depart because each country varies in their average cost of outbound air travel so, you’ll want to save those extra dollars where you can!

Try taking a bus or train between each country. Not only can it save you money, but these routes often offer beautiful scenery of its countryside.

  4. ACCOMMODATIONS

Next, you need to figure out where you're going to be sleeping at night! You have a lot of options to consider like hotels, AirBnBs, hostels, or even couch surfing. Depending on your budget and what kind of experience you’re looking for on your trip, hotels and AirBnBs can offer a more luxurious stay. But, if you’re more tight on money (and want to come back with a good story) hostels and couch surfing may be more your style.

If you’re traveling in a larger group, (4+ people) I would consider finding an AirBnB. You could split the nightly cost among the group and may give you more bang for your buck with a more private stay with access to personal amenities (kitchen, private bathroom, individual rooms, etc.)

In my experience, I opted to stay in hostels because of my student budget and disclaimer: hostels are not as scary as people often make them out to be! Not to mention, a lot of the times the hostel staff will hold socials in the lobby so you can meet other travellers!

  5. ACTIVITIES AND OTHER EXPENSES

Don’t forget about your daily expenses which would include buying food, buying clothes or gifts.

I would always recommend bringing some extra money in case you splurge a little too much one day or something happens, and you need extra money.

There are a lot of free attractions to visit and most countries also offer “free” walking tours (you’ll tip the tour guide what you felt the tour was worth) where they’ll show you around the city and share some of the history of the place.

With that, I hope these small tips showed you that it is possible and affordable for students to go and travel! We all know the trip will be more meaningful knowing how hard you worked for it and what it took to earn it.

Good luck and bon voyage!

5 Easy Ways to Make Money at University & College

Whether you’re trying to pay your way through school or you’re looking for a bit of spending money, the stereotype of the “broke college student” doesn’t have to be you! Here are some ways you can start earning.

1.          Participate in Psychology Studies

This accounted for most of my income and was unheard of in the general school population. However, I made over $700 participating in dozens of psychology studies in one school year.

In my experience, studies are typically 1 hour long and pay $10/hour though, they can range from 15 minutes to 3 hours. Graduate students likely run the studies and will post their contact information on bulletin boards in buildings and libraries around campus (The social science’s building will probably have a lot!). Simply send an email saying you’re interested in doing their study, and ask about their availability. Studies need a lot of participants, so tell your friends so you’ll all have a little extra to spend on the weekend!

2.          Work an On-Campus Part-Time Job

When you work at an establishment on-campus, they usually hire the student, meaning they’ll likely be very understanding with scheduling and time commitments. I’ve seen postings ranging from barista or waitress to a life drawing model for studio art classes.

Many schools also offer a work-study program if you’re looking for a more stable source of income. There are positions across a variety of disciplines ranging from administrative work to note-taking and research lab assistants. You’ll have to keep an eye out for new job postings as new positions can come up at any moment.

3.          Become a Residence or Campus Tour Guide

This is a great option for any student. You can take a break from your day and show prospective students around the campus you’ve grown to love!

Tour lengths will vary with each school, but residence tours range around 30–60 minutes while campus tours can run closer to 2 hours. The job pays $14/hour and you likely have 1-3 shifts per week. This is a great option, as coordinators can be very accommodating and understanding with your schedule.

 4.          Rent Out Your Driveway or Garage

Students who drive cars to school know how expensive buying a student parking pass can be. This is where you come in. If you live close to school and you have a vacant driveway, why not offer yours! You can post in your school’s student Facebook group that you’re offering to rent out your unused driveway or garage or oftentimes, someone will post asking for an available driveway, just keep your eyes peeled!

5.          Sell Some Clothes

Maybe Marie Kondo has sparked inspiration in you, and you’ve purged your closet of unwanted clothes. But alas, now you’ve got a bag of second-hand clothes and you’re hoping to turn that bag of clothes into a bag of cash.

It has never been easier to sell your goods with social media such as Instagram or Facebook and peer-to-peer marketplace apps like Depop, Carousell, Poshmark. Keep in mind you might score more sales through social media channels as they’ll likely be buyers from your close network and there will already be a sense a trust around the legitimacy of the transaction.

There are so many opportunities to make money at school and regardless of your availability, you can always find something, you just have to look for it.

How to write a compelling job post and job description

Job post vs job description

A job post and a job description are often considered as being one and the same. It’s true that both serve similar purposes are usually located together, but they actually differ in many ways.

A job description communicates the role responsibilities and the desired qualifications and experience for a job.

On the other hand, a job post acts as an advertisement. It complements a job description by being a shorter but more dazzling version that captures the attention of candidates.

A job post should include information about the company, as well as a sneak peek into the company’s culture (benefits, perks, values, etc). The goal is to provide as much information as possible, while motivating desirable candidates to apply.

How to write a job post and job description

Most companies overlook job descriptions and posts and don't realize that, more often than not, they make up the first impression that a candidate has with a company.  Too often, we encounter the same generic descriptions, as if there was a universal template that all organizations follow. That’s why we’ve identified a 10 simple action-items for you to craft a compelling job description and job post to help you stand out from the crowd and attract top talent.

1. Have a realistic job title

Since the job title is the first thing a job seeker sees when viewing a job description, it must be clear and enticing. It must include the job function, like accounting or engineering, as well as the organizational level, such as assistant or manager. The job title needs to be relatable to prospective employees, for this will motivate them to pursue the job description further. These days, companies like to spruce up their job titles by using non-traditional ones, like “Marketing Guru” or “Accounting Wizard”. These kinds of titles can be problematic because they can demotivate qualified professional candidates from applying and they aren’t optimized for search engines, meaning your job post may not appear when job seekers enter titles that they relate to.

2. Make the work location obvious

Displaying the location in the center makes it easy for candidates to filter to see if the role is something they should apply to. The last thing that you want is to waste time sifting through resumes from qualified candidates, who are unable to commute to your position’s location. If the location is in a major city, we recommended that companies indicate a neighbourhood in the job posting so that extra research is not required. Some companies have roles that can be remote and some companies are remote altogether. If you have roles like this, it would be beneficial to mention that on the job posting as well.

3. Include a role objective

Before you get into the meaty parts of the job description, it's important to have a brief description of what the nature of the job role includes. Explain the reasons why your company is recruiting for this position, the desired goals to be accomplished by prospective employees, and how they can go about attaining them.  Don’t forget to mention who the successful candidate will report to and which team he or she will be working with. The role objective should be a pretext to the specific job responsibilities.

4. List the important duties of the position

Here is where you elaborate on the role objective by listing responsibilities in bullet points. It’s crucial to list the exact duties that are required from the new hire so that prospective candidates can determine if they are qualified to apply for the position or not. Your job description can be much more effective if you use terminology that is consistent with the industry you are recruiting for when listing the job responsibilities.

5. Quantify a reasonable number of required years of experience

At first glance, the necessary qualifications component of a job description may seem self-explanatory. You simply state both the desired education and the number of years of experience required, right?  In reality, it’s common for many companies to overestimate the necessary amount of years of experience desired. This is because organizations do not normally spend time pondering about the years of experience component, and as a result, this lack of thinking can prevent qualified candidates from applying. Instead of making short-sighted guesses of appropriate ranges, we recommend that you consult with hiring managers to determine what their opinions might be and whether they are reasonable or not. It’s also important to take into account the levels of experience among other employees in the department you are recruiting for to better understand what is required for the position.

6. Give a brief description of your company

This section seems like a given, but in reality, not many companies choose to put considerable effort into making this appealing to candidates. A company description should include information about what your company does, the kind of work culture that is present, as well as a summary of your mission, purpose, and values.  Having a clear work culture, mission, and purpose is very important because job-seekers not only want jobs that they are qualified for, but they also want to be a part of an organization that fits their interests, values, and personality traits.

We recommend taking some time to ask your current employees about what their perspectives are on your company culture and values to better understand your employer brand

7. Showcase your company’s culture and recognition

To add some more dazzle to your job post, your company can add photos that feature your employees and your company’s culture. It’s also a great idea to include links to your company’s social pages (Instagram, Twitter, linkedIn, and Facebook, etc) to show top talent what you have to offer. You can even go further and talk about industry awards and recognition that your company has received, as well as the various community involvement initiatives your company takes part in.

8. Mention an exclusive benefits package

Even though it’s always a good idea to indicate the kinds of benefits your company provides, like health and dental insurance, vacation time off, and retirement savings plans, it’s important to also talk about exclusive benefits.

Nowadays, job seekers are more attracted to benefits and perks that include flexible work hours, discounts on gym memberships, mentorship programs, employee wellness programs, or fun office niceties, like free lunches. Company perks like these help your company to be seen as an attractive place to work. If your organization does not already offer exclusive benefits, it’s a good idea to have a meeting with management to discuss the possibility of incorporating them into your offering.

9. Generalize a salary range

Many organizations question whether a salary range should be mentioned in a job description. It’s common for companies to provide a general range, as well as a collective phrase, like “competitive compensation” or “compensation will commensurate with experience”. We recommend giving job seekers some idea about how much they can earn at the beginning of the recruitment process because it ensures that salary expectations are consistent with yours from the start.

10. Communicate work, travel, and compliance-related information

Similar to location, job seekers are not interested in applying to jobs that operate during work hours or have mandatory travel requirements that are not compatible with their schedules. To avoid this, it’s a good idea to provide as much detail as possible in the job description to ensure that candidates feel confident in their abilities to work in accordance with job requirements. In addition, your organization should always be informed about the kinds of legal information that need to be mentioned in your job description. As an example, government organizations and banking institutions are required to perform background checks on candidates before offering employment, so this is mentioned in the job descriptions. We recommend that you consult with a legal adviser to determine if any other information should be mentioned.

Extra tips

Refrain from using patronizing language

Be cautious of crafting a job description that tells candidates not to apply if they are not ambitious or over-achieving. This kind of language or similar statements can demotivate exceptional candidates from pursuing your job roles.

Implement gender-neutral pronouns

It’s best to not use pronouns like, he or she or him or her because it shows job seekers that you are interested in a specific person or gender. As a result, this can create a negative bias of your company in the minds of candidates. Try pronouns like “their, them, etc”.

Attract desirable candidates by individualizing pages

If your goal is to target a specific talent group, like seasoned professionals or new grads, then consider designating a job post page with titles that are geared toward those groups. For example, to attract new grads, use a title that says, “mentorship programs, internships, and entry-level opportunities”.  You can build on this section by showcasing photos, testimonials, and videos that talk about recent employees who have held these roles and their experiences with your company.

Job descriptions and postings might seem daunting to write, but once you have a formula that works, showing off your company will be no problem! In short,  your job postings should aim at being as informative as possible, while not sounding like other descriptions that came before it.

5 Tips for hiring Millennials

When recruiting in today’s workforce, it is important to keep in mind the different trends amongst millennials. If you are in the business of recruiting, chances are you are hiring a millennial. We’ve all heard the stereotypes, however the fact is millennials are changing the workforce culture, and employers need to recognize this and adapt. In fact, millennials makeup the largest segment in the workplace, with the percentage increasing.

Before hiring a millennial, it is important to note that there are multiple factors that need to be considered. Here are 5 tips to keep in mind when recruiting millennials into the workforce.

1. Be sure to create a strong company culture!

- There is a misconception that millennial workers don’t seek meaningful employment. However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Millennials appreciate a challenging work environment, and even find it rewarding. It’s when there is a poor company culture that you will find an employee feel discouraged. When creating an environment that is not only challenging, but appealing and rewarding, you will get the best out of your employees!

2. Be open to a new opinion!

- Having a culture where employees can feel open enough to share their opinions and ideas without being immediately shot down is important to millennial workers. Millennials are often thinking about new and progressive ways to reach new audiences, and when given the freedom to share their ideas, you will see a positive attitude when working on a task.

3. Provide mentorship and feedback!

- Millennial workers are eager, hardworking and ambitious. They thrive on receiving feedback, even if it’s not always positive, as they can take the feedback and learn from it. Millennials want to make a difference in the workplace and are enthusiastic when given the right opportunities. To get the best out of your millennial employee, provide feedback and provide opportunities to grow within the organization.

4. Embrace new technology!

- Millennials love technology. They are tech savvy, and can contribute in multiple ways just from their knowledge on new technologies. Often times, many employers have an “old school” approach, and don’t want to embrace new technology. However, embrace this and view it as an opportunity, and you won’t be disappointed!

5. Provide an opportunity!

- As mentioned, millennials are ambitious and eager to go above and beyond in the workplace. When given the right opportunities, millennials can surprise you with how much they can achieve and bring to an organization. They embrace opportunity and have strong leadership qualities, that can have a profoundly positive effect at work. So always keep in mind new opportunities to provide your employees, and you will be sure to notice the benefits!

How to Motivate Yourself

We all have those moments when all we want is to stay in bed and forget about the responsibilities waiting for us, but the problem is that those responsibilities don't just disappear. Sometimes we need to find a little motivation to get us started for the day.

A key to motivate yourself is by making sure you don't burn yourself out. No one will judge you for needing a break every once in a while, and you're not essential to anyone if you're exhausted. There's been plenty of times where I overwork myself and forget that I'm human, and it's okay for me to stop.

It also doesn't help to have negative things or people impacting your life.  It's difficult to remain focused when all you can think about are the negatives. You have to worry about yourself and what's causing you to be unhappy; you can't worry about other people's feelings or emotions all the time. For a long time, I struggled with doing what was best for me, but now that I've taken those steps, I'm way happier.

Quotes are another great way to keep yourself motivated. There are quotes for when you're sad, heart-broken, unmotivated, confused, anxious... really anything. Here's an example:

"Be thankful for what you are now, and keep fighting for what you want to be tomorrow." -Unknown

I know so many quotes that have changed my life and way of thinking, and it's a great way to find motivation for the day ahead. No matter what you're feeling, you can find a quote to help put things into perspective.

Lastly, make a change! If you're unhappy with something going on in your life, it's up to you to figure out what needs changing and how you can do it. For instance, if you're at work and you find yourself wishing you were somewhere else, find a way to make it fun while you're there. That could be listening to music, asking to try out something new, etc. Don't be afraid to get yourself out there. It's better to regret what you've done than regret what you haven't done.
